The ESC presents The Life and Times of William Shakespeare

The English Speakers' Circle presents - The Life and Times of William Shakespeare by the Wilde Shamrock Touring Theatre.

Who was William Shakespeare? Whenever we hear his name we think of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, we think of ‘Macbeth’. We think of the genius that is accepted as the greatest writer of all time. Doesn’t everyone think of that?
Wilde Shamrock Touring Theatre doesn’t. They are more interested in William Shakespeare as a human being. Have you ever thought of Shakespeare having to suffer with every day life? A difficult marriage, loud kids irritating him, temperamental actors making his life a misery. These are the features of any genius that helps to mould his life. And they are the features that Wilde Shamrock bring to life. Just what was happening in Shakespeare’s life that may have helped him to create some of the most celebrated works in the English language.  We look at his life as it was. A struggle to make his family happy while trying to satisfy his artistic abilities. Come along and see the hilarious interpretation of the life of the world’s greatest writer. Not to be missed.

Wilde Shamrock Touring Theatre has been touring Europe since 2011 with a unique blend of theatre and Irish Music. Based in Dublin, the company plays in schools, theatres and town halls. The blend of interactive theatre with music has been thrilling audiences for the past three years.

Tim Berresheim in the Kunstverein für Die Rheinlande und Westfalen - More ‘Digital Sweat’

If you step by the Kunsthalle these days to see the Thomas Ruff exhibition, you also shouldn’t miss what’s going on on the first floor exhibition room of the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen. Aachen-based artist, Tim Berresheim, is showing ‘Eye and World’ - anonymously set, digitally modelled figures that are placed before reduced, neutral backgrounds. Berresheim uses these as human canvases, draws and sketches on them and converts the figures that are made with the 3D-graphic programme ‘Cinema 4D’ back into a two-dimensional artwork by printing them out life-sized.

Berresheim‘s opulent visual production shares one commonality with Ruff’s – the ‘digital sweat’ that ran whilst manufacturing the work. Both artists benefit from the possibilities of digital technology and then they go beyond, exceeding the potential. While Ruff’s works focus on the functions and possibilities of light, Berresheim is more interested in the moment of seeing and perceiving. His combination of digital technology, 3D-modelling, printing, handwriting and sketching are meant to question the conventions of defining a picture. What is the frame? What are the surroundings?

Berresheim’s works are aligned on the wall, embedded in a wallpaper, and yet, they have an arresting 3 dimensionality to them. Entering the room is like stepping into the studio of a tattoo-artist collecting ideas for his first full-body-cover. Even the artist himself – who also creates music – is tattooed all over, as if he could hop into one of his very own pictures the very next second ... check out his great website here.

‘Knitting Peace’ and more at the düsseldorf festival!

With one of their visually most impressive shows, this year’s ‘düsseldorf festival!’ blew you away at half time! ‘Knitting peace’ is the name of the piece that kept visitors breathless for three nights of the festival. The Swedish ensemble ‘Circus Cirkör’, a project that has run for over 16 years now, and has been enjoyed by over 1.2 million people, presented their latest production of four artists and two musicians, sounding out the borders of theatre and contemporary circus. Exploring the genre of knitting, the artists played on - and above - the main festival marquee staging and fulfilled the first part of the show’s name by actually knitting part of the entwined stage set live before the audience's eyes.
But if you were looking for 'peace', the grand Festival Marquee on the Burgplatz was not the right place for you. Vigorous moves and risqué tricks between thin ropes and knotted, knitted spiderwebs, together with the combination of violin and melancholiac, rocky electric sounds created a taught atmosphere in the tent. The acrobats, dressed in white or black, crawled, rolled, balanced, climbed and unicycled over the stage, reminding me of silkworms caught in their own nets, constantly building and destroying their cocoons.

The festival runs until September 28 and is definitely worth checking out. Just as ‘Circus Cirkör’ blurs the lines between dance theatre and classic acrobatic circus, the düsseldorf festival! offers a wide range of concerts, dance, theatre, readings and everything in between; bringing together and eloquently crossing the lines of arts and culture.

Highlights for the following week at the düsseldorf festival!

If you enjoy contemporary circus, you might find the Aurélien Bory & Compagnie 111 production ‘Sans objet’ interesting. Their ‘Pas de Trois for Robots and Acrobats’ will be on in the grand festival marquee from September 23 - 25 at 8 pm.

The interplay of violin and electronic sound, is presented with the ‘Inside Partita’ of Midori Seiler & Friends in the tanzhaus nrw.
The mix of performative concert and electronic sound installation can be seen for two days on September 23 and 24 at 7.30pm. Even for fans of BreakDance and Indian Kathak the düsseldorf festival! has something to offer. If the combination of modern dance and hiphop does it for you, Kader Attou & Compagnie Accrorap bring their 'Vision of Mankind Dancing' to the Festival Marquee on the Burgplatz for Friday 26 and Saturday 27. The German premiere of their production ‘The Roots’ will be on at 8pm.

Those who want to join the peaceful knitting revolution, please feel free to join the urban knitting project of the Mülheim-based designer Nora Peters, who, accompanying the festival and sponsored by the ‘Industrieeterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG’, knitted her colourful woollen artworks round the pillars of the IDR-car park at the Carlsplatz. So if you can – join the knitting operation and knit for peace – or anything else that keeps you inspired!

Open Studios 2014 - Kunstpunkte

On the last two weekends in August, some 500 artists in Düsseldorf will open their studios to the general public. You can pick up a leaflet which shows a map where the studios are at many bookstores, cafés and cultural institutions around the city and at RhineBuzz c/o The English Language Forum, Neustrasse 39 in the Altstadt.

For this year's Open Studios - Kunstpunkte - there will be only ONE RhineBuzz tour on August 31 at 3pm. Seats are limited on the gorgeous vintage bus, please reserve with Petra Weiss at the Department of Culture, see details below. Petra speaks English. Seats are €15.00 per person.

The tours last 3 hours, you visit selected studios, usually around 5 or 6. Each bus is accompanied by two Düsseldorf artists who tell you a little about the arts scene in the city and the artists you are about to visit. Conversation in the studios is highly encouraged! This year I will be accompanied by composer Peter Gahn.
There's always a great atmosphere on the bus, many say this is the highlight of the annual RhineBuzz events; we are often told the time just flies by!

You get to see all genres of the arts by artists from all nations. Most artwork is for sale.
The studios are often in intriguing hidden spots in the city, places you would never even know of, let alone visit, if it wasn't for the Kunstpunkte weekend. Sometimes the studios are in former bunkers, churches, hideouts in the forest, or disused factories ... sometimes in the actual home of the artist.

Smart New World Tour at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf

NSA, open source data, Big Brother, protection of the individual, Aaron Swartz, social networks, 2084 ..
How do artists deal with these subjects?

Sometimes I see an exhibition and I just know it is perfect for the RhineBuzz community!
When I experienced the preview of Smart New World at the Kunsthalle - I knew this was one of those shows.

So all you geeks and nerds of the RhineBuzz community, this is the event for you! Curator Elodie Evers is looking forward to your insightful questions from the inside of this contentious, most engrossing and yet totally unavoidable subject.

As a RhineBuzz special, the Kunsthalle is kindly giving us the tour for free, entrance to the museum is also free.

The tour will begin at 6:30pm sharp! We will meet at the bottom of the stairs at the entrance to the museum. I suggest you arrive at the Kunsthalle 15 minutes before as the entry procedure can be lengthy - be prepared to read the small print
If you have the time and can be there even earlier, come in and take a look at the videos. The museum closes at 8pm and after the tour you will probably be short on time to see them all - and they are most certainly worth a look.

Book Presentation in English at Museum Kunstpalast

Richard Meitner, Reductio ad Absurdum 1977, Galss & Gold

As part of the supporting programme for Art & Alchemy at Museum Kunstpalast there will be a book presentation »Laboratories of Art. Alchemy and Art Technology from Antiquity to the 18th century« with Sven Dupré und Lawrence M. Principe.

Two outstanding experts share their insight into researching art and alchemy. A publication will be presented to the public that is the outcome of a symposium at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin in March 2013. The symposium was one of the foundations for the concept of the exhibition »Art and Alchemy – The Mystery of Transformation«.

Sven Dupré is professor of history of knowledge at the Freie Universität Berlin and director of the Research Group »Art and Knowledge in Pre-modern Europe« at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. He is scientific advisor to the exhibition »Art and Alchemy« and joint editor of its accompanying publication.

Lawrence M. Principe is Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, and holds a joint appointment in the Johns Hopkins Department of Chemistry. He is among the foremost specialists on the history of alchemy. As scientific advisor he is a cooperation partner for the exhibition »Art and Alchemy«.

Art & Alchemy at Museum Kunstpalast

The exhibition Art & Alchemy has been over three years in the making and sends one on an intriguing exploration into how both scientists and artists have dealt with the idea of transition, creating something precious from something ordinary - from the medieval artist Dürer's view of what occurred when Eve bit into the apple, to Albert Einstein's recipe for alchemy to the psychoanalytical view of the early 20th century.

But what is this exhibition actually about? I think it is a little tricky to grasp at first, and of course the core idea deals with scientists and their often secret work in gloomy spaces but wonder around and you soon understand that the entire show is about us - human beings - and our constant search for change, the possible and the impossible, for the unknown and possibly for the unattainable.

The exhibition was conceived in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and experts from the Chemical Foundation in Philadelphia as a result of the very first conversation Museum Kunstpalast's director Beat Wismer exchanged with Dedo von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk who had departed the Corning Glass Museum in upstate NY to come to Düsseldorf's Hentrich Glass Museum as its new head, within the Museum Kunstpalast. Glass-making of course being such an everyday wonder that accompanies us everywhere - man took sand and made it into glass, and not just functional glass, the artists took this incredible material and turned it into the most splendidly stunning pieces.

The museum has created a dark and mysterious wing of the exhibition
Photo©Oliver Miltzner

Now, some years later, this vision has come true. Curated by Dedo von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk, the historical wing of the exhibition is crammed with wondrous pieces ranging from artistic interpretations of the biblical apple, and how its symbolism changed the path of mankind; the astonishing Ripley Scrolls from the late 15th century; pieces from the occult; a marvellous wonder cabinet that one could spend all day in; a set-up of a lab as it could have been found hundreds of years ago and was typical for many aristocratic homes; and numerous beautiful paintings and interpretations of alchemy.

Together with Beat Wismer, Anita Hachmann curated the contemporary view of the exhibition in a separate wing. This is bright, and full of future concepts including 20th century paintings by Max Ernst, interpreting his surrealists visions of the transition that takes place when male and female get together. Conceptual art plays a major role in this part of the exhibition and includes Josef Beyus 7000 Oaks from the Documenta 1982 and Marcel Duchamp's 'The Box in a Suitcase'.
The ideas never stop as you see Wilhelm Mundt's 'Trashstone' series, sculpture made from trash that is taped together, reformed, ground and polished to be transformed to beautifully tactile pieces to everyone's favourite eye catcher the exquisite 'The Chymical Pleasure Garden' an inviting installation incorporating carpet, salts and crystals, wasp's nest, wax, anti-wrinkle cream and, and, and, all connected and all influencing one another and actually changing, growing, transforming throughout the show ... a beautiful piece created in the museum especially for this exhibition by Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger.

An exhibition that certainly deserves to be seen more than once.

The catalogue Art & Alchemy also comes highly recommended, it's a beautiful record of a universal subject.

The premiere of the Ballett am Rhein's b.19 last night was an exhausting experience - but tiring in the best sense of the word. I left the three performances of b.19, Antoine Jully's Hidden Features, Merce Cunningham's Scenario and Hans Van Manen's Grosse Fuge, saturated with deep impressions of colour in both a visual and emotional sense.

drei/vier - Matinee at Die Grosse at Museum Kunstpalast

It all started with a simple question: Why is there in Düsseldorf, a city with a great cultural movement, so little cooperation between the younger generations of artists outside their disciplines? I really wanted to work with these other artists. So I talked to Caroline at RhineBuzz and she replied that she would introduce me to people who could possibly help form an answer.

I had the opportunity to ask this question to other artists, museum directors, curators, press members and PR people, arriving quickly to the conclusion that one possible answer lay in our disposition to create something together. Shortly after that I met Marquet K. Lee, a soloist of the Ballett am Rhein, and an artist with a great curiosity and sensibility. He studied in New York and has had the opportunity to experiment a great deal of modern expressions in art and is very open to interdisciplinary creations.
Marquet had met Caroline on a previous RhineBuzz project and asked her similar questions to mine, so she took him along to a performance of guitarists from the Robert Schumann School of Music.
Marquet and I met, chatted and an idea was born!

With Caroline advising us on the logistical and pragmatic aspect of the project we developed the idea for drei/vier. As two foreigners in Germany, our main subject was to explore what exactly made us feel familiar here and what reminded us entirely of our non-German position. This fitted well with collaborating with RhineBuzz which is full of people like us.

A secondary subject that is very important to us, is the involvement of the public. We are both, Marquet as a dancer and I as a musician, used to performing on a stage, we accept this audience-artist separation. But we wanted to break with this and make the performance as open and inclusive for everyone as possible. That is why we decided to add a third artist, Milan Schell, student of the Institute for Music and Media at the Robert Schumann Music School, who will create this bridge between the audience and ourselves using projections and changes in lights.

For the past several weeks we have worked together along with the company of three other great dancers from the Ballett am Rhein, Nicole Morel, Sonny Loscin, Wun Sze Chan and the talented musicians Marta Pérez López, Julia Jacobs and Eduardo Herrero Fernández, to explore our themes and create this performance.
Each using our own mediums, this very thin line which separates what exactly makes us feel familiar, and what it is to be unfamiliar, is explored with one another and an audience.

Thanks to RhineBuzz, and we are able to present this work as part of the series of matinees at the exhibition Die Grosse, one of Germany’s oldest arts exhibitions, in the Museum Kunstpalast.
We look forward to you joining us, and to you creating, sharing and experiencing both us, and yourselves, in this performance with us.

Die Grosse Kunstaustellung NRW Düsseldorf 2014

Sculpture ©Beatrix Sassen
award winner of the Artists Arts Prize 2014

One of my favourite shows in the Düsseldorf calender, Die Grosse gives 152 artists from Düsseldorf and the greater area of the state of North Rhine-Westfalia the chance to show what is happening in the studios right now. This is a chance to see some of the most innovative work around, an opportunity to actually purchase directly from the exhibition, and if you take a tour you get to hear how the exhibiting and sales part of the art world works. We may also get to meet an artist or two and find out a little about the creative process.
This is a show packed with painting, photography, sculpture, collage, graffiti, video ... absolutely all genres of the creative process.
Last year these tours were well over-subscibed; the feedback was great!

Historically, this show for artists by artists is one of Europe's oldest and was a starting point for many names which later became hugely influential in the art world. Rodin, Max Ernst and Kandinsky to name but a very limited few!

Every year an artist is awarded the Artists Arts Prize, selected by their peers, this is an award of particular significance to the artist chosen. This year the prize goes to Beatrix Sassen, a woman of great talent and drive, who has a friendly and most endearing gentleness about her. She was permitted to study at the prestigious Düsseldorf Art Academy at just 16, where she was a student of the celebrated German conceptual artist Josef Beuys.

Peter Royen, winner of the Artists Arts Prize 2013 with RhineBuzzer and artist Ace Grandison exchange precious words and ideas at the meet & greet after the RhineBuzz tour in 2013. Peter Royen greatly enjoyed the RhineBuzz community and trying out all the languages he had picked up during his long and creative lifetime.
Peter Royen later in 2013, just a few months after this photograph was taken. We were all very glad that we had the wonderful chance to meet him.
